Awww, thanks! I started thinking a lot about Bill's characterization during a discussion somewhere when Bill was called stupid. Bill may not be as fast a thinker as some of the others, but he seemed motivated by love of those he tried to help. And his interactions with his son were always tender and touched with the sweetness of their early beginnings.
I'm totally sure Jack means well the majority of the time, in fact! he just seems to draw trouble to him like a moth to a flame! Thanks for pointing out the closing lines.
