POTC fandom, you make me sad

You know....I just clicked on a drabble fanfic link by an author I know I can't stand, just to see what the fandom has been doing lately.
This is Pirates of the Caribbean I'm talking about. The "fic" was prose so purple it looked like a zit, a horrible mishmash of run on sentences with no clear subject and no clear object, either. The comment it has so far is someone congratulating this author on educating us all on how "real" love works. Dear God, help us all! I could have sworn love was relative! *shakes head sadly*
I'm scared for this fandom. There's a fourth movie coming out really soon and not only is no one eagerly discussing it, many are pretending it doesn't exist and openly saying that they won't see it. Ever. The only reasons I can discern for this boycotting of the franchise is that Elizabeth isn't in it. Or Will. Now...I really do like Elizabeth and Will. I do. And I can't completely agree that their story is finished as TPTB state, but when the actors who play them don't want to continue to be involved then you either write a script without them, or you cast different people. No one is really happy with either scenario, though I personally would pick option A thanks.
Honestly, from what I've been able to find out, this next movie looks really exciting! The characters cannot live in a bubble never experiencing change or new people. That's incredibly dull and if it was done like that the fandom really WOULD die. Of course, I hope it doesn't go the route of The X-Files or Star Wars and become a cash cow. That would be dreadful, and sad. No jumping the shark please. But until we see the finished product, we cannot tell, can we? No. But Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush are reprising their roles as Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa!! These characters are interesting! They have a lot of draw! And did I mention JOHNNY DEPP is in it? He's freaking fantastic. I'll generally go see a movie with him in it, on the strength of his name alone. Sometimes they're bad (See Nick of Time) but often they are good!
Come on people. What's the problem with On Stranger Tides?

Date: 2010-11-30 01:44 pm (UTC)You know, since I returned to livejournal, you are pretty much the only one that ever answers my posts. And I'm grateful for you, but I wonder what happened to all my other "friends."

Date: 2010-11-30 03:28 pm (UTC)You're also one of the very few people on my f-list who posted something recently (well, this) about POTC - I'm not nearly as interested or into it as I used to be, but I have a lingering vestment in it. I'm not as against a fourth movie as I once was, and that used to be chiefly because of how stupid the LJ fandom had become over the sequels. Really - I was an asshole, a few other people I could name were assholes. A few still are. I've learned this isn't odd in any fandom, though; the trick is not to care very much. But it does make it hard to have fun discussions over aspects of the movie when you have people ready to fire arrows at others for their preferred 'ship or favorite character - again, I'm as guilty of the latter as others are of the former. I think it's going to take new fans to get things moving along again, TBH. And I'm not sure the fandom will ever be as active as it was after the first movie - it's not like Star Trek, where you had various TV series on for years and years, with new episodes coming on all the time to discuss. POTC consists of, what, maybe 9 hours of canon? We as fans have really wrung A LOT out of those few hours, you have to admit.

Date: 2010-12-13 11:41 pm (UTC)I can't even bear to look at the LJ fandom these days. It had degenerated even more into little pairing camps and I despair. I remember well the flame wars and the asshole days of more than one person. Though I always tried to be courteous to all the fans and what they liked, I still managed to piss off some. This I know for a fact. It amuses me, because my own personal pairing is practically nonexistent......except in the new movie! Dun dun DUUUUN!
Huh. Maybe that's why I'm excited for it?

Date: 2011-01-15 04:15 am (UTC)As for the 4th installment, I say bring it on. I love Johnny. I love Jack. I have one room in my home dedicated to Jack Sparrow. I met Johnny Depp, saw him twice in person and I see and appreciate everything that he does, whether it is a movie, documentary or charitable event.
I have been pushing to get Jack's original crew back in the POTC movies and now with number 5 officially announced, I want to do everything possible to get Marty,Lee,David,McKenzie back in the film. I am in touch with Kevin, Marty,Lee and David on a personal level so POTC means more to me than just a movie with actors in it. I have some nice friendships as well and have been able to meet several people from the films and get some nice swag to boot. I say to everyone that Johnny is indeed the nicest sweetest, down to earth person and that he is so thankful for all of his fans for supporting him. He is true to himself and will never sell out, especially Jack!
Sure I'd love to have a cameo of Will and Elizabeth too-I believe most fans would, but not to have another story line. Just a brief scene with all being together again!
Enough of my drooling. Everyone have a great day(or night)
Jack's mate...
