Nitpick

At this moment I want chocolate so badly I might kill for it.

I'm in the mood to nitpick, and rant. Nitpick first. I love the PotC movies. I love the layers and depth and lotsaplots. I love discussing. But! I get really really pissed off when people take a certain aspect and rip it to death trying to analyze what it really all meant.

"Why was Elizabeth sitting in the rain crying in her pretty dress when Will doesn't show up for the wedding/gets arrested by the EITC?"

This can be applied to all kinds of "mis"characterizations.  "Why did Mulder break down Scully's door instead of calling her cell phone?" "Why did Obi Wan tell Luke to go to his teacher Yoda when he was trained by Qui Gon?" "Why did Jack send Will to the Flying Dutchman to pay his debt?" "Why did Elizabeth think the compass was pointing at Jack when it wasn't?"

You get the picture.

Beloved, Hollywood has wiggle room for these kind of screw ups. It's four little words called It's For Dramatic Emphasis. Either that or it's just TPTB not bothering to follow up with actual character motivation! *gasp* Not that!

Rant is next.

I write Pirates fanfic. I created my own character, a match for Jack Sparrow. They have about a jazillion adventures together. And sports, torture, giants, true love...errr, wait. Sorry. That's for another movie. *crazy smile* But you get the idea. And I am protective of my fic, and my original character. Someone mentioned the other day that they usually don't read stories with new characters, only the ones from the movies. OK, wait, hold on right there.

Did you not notice that new people were introduced in each movie?? Tia Dalma and Davy Jones, both new characters in DMC. Captain Teague and Pirate Lord Sao Feng, new characters. How come mine doesn't count because *I* created her? *insert sound of whining here*

As I said to someone else earlier tonight, I'm gonna sail the ship I like!

*pounces on choccie only to discover they are virtual. weeps and gnashes teeth*

No, not a direct result, but possibly contributory. But in a good way. The comments I read on your post made me think. I like that. Other discussion I have read just give me a headahce. Can't say as I've had that happen on your journal yet, and I've been lurking a fair while.

I'm still headdesking, a bit. I am sick to death of lurkers who pounce on someone else's post, leave a snarky comment, and then hop on the "oh, gee, didn't intend to offend and you must have no sense of humor and I have such a BIG LIFE that I never waste my time with this sort of thing" bus. Apparently these two are sisters, no less. I had a run in with one of them on [livejournal.com profile] pirategasm when I asked the author of a vile Jack!rape-torture fic (the rapist-torturer in question was Elizabeth, of course) to email me privately, as she just happened to use the title Sympathy for the Devil and drew several of my readers in, much to their horror. The lurker in question pounced on that immediately, defending the author's right to use the title and to bash Elizabeth to hell and back, without having any idea what my issue was. I can only imagine what her response would be to a fic featuring her woobee Will in a similar role.

Aargh! Wank is baaaaaaddddddd.

OMG, I stumbled across that fic, last night when I was exploring lj! I kept thinking, "but how could Elizabeth overpower *Jack*!" Maybe he might let her push him around a bit if she's angry enough, but certainly not like that! Of course that's not your point anyway, I'm just saying that it was unrealistic anyway. I'm sorry you had to deal with that, must have been dreadful.

This rant/nitpick was actually born from a discussion I read on POTC discussion comm. Someone asked about card game that feautured Will and Liz as King and Queen and Jack as *snicker* Jack. And since Jack had put them both in thier positions of power, would he influence their son's life? The very first comment was someone saying that W/E were smart enough to keep their family far away from him. Another said that W/E were way smarter than J.

How can people dislike a main character of a movie they love that much?? Honestly, I DON'T understand haters. Of anything. Really don't, they just puzzle me.

It wasn't fun to deal with that situation, for me or the people who were reading my story and accidentally opened her dreck - I got email for days. Apparently that fic was mild compared to some that she's written - someone told me her previous fic featured Jack being tortured, raped and maimed (multiple amputations) for a dozen chapters.

I don't understand haters, either, or why anyone feels the need to spend time indulging even dislike on a fanboard. How is that fun? And btw, Disney makes the same cards with Jack and Liz as King and Queen, and Will as the knave. The Mouse don't miss a trick *g*
